"What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?"
BACKGROUND:
On July 5, 1852, abolitionist Frederick Douglass gave a keynote address at an Independence Day celebration in Rochester, New York. In his speech, Douglass asks, "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" Douglass was a powerful speaker, often traveling six months out of the year to give lectures on abolition. This video is a reenactment of a portion of Douglass' speech. |
