History on the Road
Historical Field Experience Project
"One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things."
~ Henry Miller
At some point during the school year, you will be participating in a field experience project designed to further enhance your understanding and appreciation of American and Colorado history. This project will require you to experience our nation and/or state's history by visiting some type of historic exhibit or event outside of school. Fortunately, you will have a great deal of choice in how, when, and where you decide to go.
This project is worth 100 points ... double the value of a unit quiz. Regardless of when you conduct your visit, this grade will appear in the grade book in the 3rd trimester.
You will have to complete the following requirements for this project:

BEFORE YOUR TRIP
1. See Mr. Cushing to get a HOTR Project Flowchart. Put it in the HOTR section of your class binder.

2. Choose a historical experience to attend. You may choose any event from the following webpage...
... or you may choose to attend other experiences or visit other destinations (this includes sites outside of Colorado, or even the U.S.). As you will see on the website, every destination has an Extra Credit Booster Value which will "boost" the grade of the report that you are going to write. Generally, the further your destination is from Conifer, the higher the booster value is. 20% is the highest booster.
IF YOU PLAN TO GO SOMEWHERE NOT ON MY LIST YOU MUST EMAIL ME SOME INFORMATION ABOUT WHERE YOU INTEND TO GO. This information must be sent to, and approved by me BEFORE you submit your Travel Plan. Destinations that are not focused on American history — for example, places dealing with natural history, or the history of other nations — will not be approved.
3. Submit a History on the Road online Travel Plan. This online form must be filled out completely, and submitted 48 hours or more before your trip. Incomplete and/or last second Travel Plans will not be approved. Click on the following button to submit a Travel Plan. REPORTS THAT ARE WRITTEN & SUBMITTED ABOUT TRIPS THAT WERE NOT PRECEDED BY A TRAVEL PLAN WILL EARN A 25% PENALTY.

4. Wait for Mr. Cushing to approve your Travel Plan. You must get back your Travel Plan BEFORE you go on your trip ... even if you are going to one of the pre-approved destinations listed on the website. REPORTS THAT ARE WRITTEN & SUBMITTED ABOUT TRIPS THAT DID NOT RECEIVE MR. CUSHING'S APPROVAL WILL EARN A 20% PENALTY.
ON YOUR TRIP
1. Take a picture of yourself at your destination. Your photo is a mandatory part of your assignment.
2. You can also get a program or brochure from the place you visit, however these items DO NOT replace your photo.
3. Involve yourself in the experience. Don’t think of this as a school project – think it as an opportunity to become more informed about your past. If possible, talk to the performers / museum curators / organizers of the experience you attend. Learn all you can about what they do and what it means to them to help keep our past alive.
4. Take some general notes about what you experience. Nothing fancy... just a few things to help you remember what to write about.

2. Submitting your report is a four-step process:
Step I: Submit the Prepatory Draft of your report using Wufoo.com. Using the Wufoo site will ensure that you meet all of the length and topic requirements in your report. You will receive a confirmation email from Wufoo with the text of your submission.
|
Step II: Cut & paste the text from the confirmation email into a new Word, Pages, or GoogleDoc file of your own.
• Each section of your Wufoo submission should be a new paragraph in your document. • The section headings from the Wuffo submission -- i.e. "Introduction", "Comparison", etc. -- should not be copied. Step III: Adjust the formatting of your report until your paper is ready for final submission. Consult the Team Writing Guide* page in your copy of the Capitols Guidebook for more information on the features of a formal writing submission.
• Make sure you've added a proper heading. • Check for spelling & grammar errors. • Make sure that the body of your paper is double-spaced. * Click below to download a copy of the Team Writing Guide.
Step IV: Submit your final paper to Mr. Cushing by uploading it to TurnItIn.com.
• Click here if you cannot remember your TurnItIn passwords. |
3. Paperclip your photograph, and other items to your printed Submission Rubric and give the packet to Mr. Cushing.
Your report should be submitted within two weeks of the completion of your trip.
Wait any longer than two weeks, and you'll forget the experiences you had.
All reports must be submitted online by 3:00 pm on the last Friday of April.
Anyone failing to submit their online report in by this date will receive a zero for this project.
Students were given seven months to complete this project, so late reports will NOT be accepted.
